Pray Away HIV? The "Miracle Cure!"

At least three people in London with HIV have died after they stopped taking life saving drugs on the advice of their Evangelical Christian pastors.

The women died after attending churches in London where they were encouraged to stop taking the antiretroviral drugs in the belief that God would heal them, their friends and a leading HIV doctor said.

Responding to the BBC London investigation, Lord Fowler, the former health minister responsible for the famous Aids awareness campaign of the 1980s, condemned the practice.

"It's just wrong, bad advice that should be confronted," said the Tory peer, who chaired last month's House of Lords committee into HIV.

Jane Iwu, 48, from Newham, east London, described one case, saying: "I know of a friend who had been to a pastor. She told her to stop taking her medication - that God is a healer and has healed her."

"This lady believed it. She stopped taking her medication. She passed away," said Ms Iwu, who has HIV herself.

It is like saying drink the kool-aid.  When will people stop and see that science is a truism and the most organized religious groups are nothing more than cults?  Do you believe Scientologists are as deeply religious and devout to "God" as you?  How about Mitt Romney and that "Mormon" church?  Or those pesky Muslims in Iran?

Personally I like the idea of worshipping the goddess Venus much more alluring.

  1. When are more people going to wake up and see Religion and the belief in fiction & false promises are the route to so much that is very wrong in our world! What is it going to take? Why is the death of these people not enough to teach people that "FAITH" in this supposed "GOD" is pure
delusional bullshit! A SCIENCE based on facts of Medicine was working in treating their HIV. -- Kirby from Manchester

  2. I hate to sound cruel but I think people that follow religion and take the bible and the word of god as literal are not very smart people. They must be either so lost in search for meaning or just so stupid they have not educated themselves on the religions they worship. Churches prey on the desperate human condition for profit. Praying is make believe with no results. Preying is real and it hurts and destroys many living the fragile human condition. Paul- Lowestoft Suffolk

  3. So true.
Even scarier, In the U.S. we have a leading GOP candidate who is Mormon and believes that Joseph Smith received Golden Plates from his God. Smith claims that he received his answer in the form of his first vision in 1820, at the age of 14 in Palymra. God and Jesus Christ appeared before Joseph as two separate persons, apparently in flesh and bone bodies. This conflicts with the traditional Christian beliefs that God is a spirit, and that God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit consist of three persons in a single entity. Smith wrote that he was told by Jesus to: "Join none of them, for they were all wrong, and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt. The Golden Plates contain all sorts of fantastical beliefs that have no basis in reality.(Top ten crazy beliefs of mormons) http://listverse.com/2008/02/04/top-10-bizarre-mormon-beliefs/ I mean, truly insane beliefs. How could people vote for a person who is so gullible to remain loyal to a hoax created by a con man. How could someone vote for a man who believes in such insanity?

Romney was born into a religion the same as most other victims who are born into religions their parents got duped by. Most people just never question what they have been spoon fed.

I only point out Romney and his particular brand of crazy because he is still the front runner.

Every other GOP candidate also follow christian faiths. None of the GOP candidates believe in evolution. This is a horrifying reality.

They too like your article use praying for solutions to our countries problems. We don't need prayers, we need smart economists!

  4. To the comment above: I just read the link to the "Top ten crazy beliefs of mormons." I had no idea it was such a nutty religion.

Scientology and their fiction sci fi dogma comes close for whacky award.

Let us not forget the the spooky catholic church cult with their robes and other cult garb. The priests and popes look like cult members. The presentational part of their act amuses me. The predators lurking behind the secret curtains should all be jailed.

Pray away HIV? Good luck with that fantasy.

  5. It is so sad these people stopped taking their medication because frauds told them god would save them. Now they are dead. The people who told them to stop taking their meds should be charged with murder.

  6. People who fall for religion are lost and weak people. Not very smart either
considering they ignore all science proving otherwise. I guess it is desperation. Tragic story. Justine
