Hormonal Optimization

Click on Link to Website Below.
I wanted to share some important information with my readers. While I was in my mid 30's, my Doctor, Dr. W. Michael Carragher III, DO, ACOFP, through blood test helped me discover my natural testosterone levels had dropped from the ideal levels of my 20's. Dr. Carragher specializes in Age Management Medicine & Hormonal Optimization.

I started his optimization program and have found it has improved my life's vitality significantly. Dr. Carragher looks at the balance of all hormones: thyroid, human growth hormone (HGH), insulin, cortisol, testosterone, etc. Other perks I find great at The Body Well are intelligent physical fitness training to optimize hormones, a nutritionist who focuses on hormonal optimization and anti-aging nutrition, stress management, and the list goes on and on. Below is a letter Dr. Carragher recently send out to his patients:

To My Valued Hormonal Optimization Clients:
Your interest in maintaining youth, vitality and optimal hormonal levels has prompted me to send article and interesting facts regarding hormonal optimization and why I am such an advocate of it. I think you’ll find the following study interesting and supportive. Please feel free to forward to anyone you know who may be interested in optimizing their hormone.
Low testosterone linked to long-term risk of death in relatively healthy adult men
ENDO 2007: The Endocrine Society Research Summaries Book June 5, 2007

This study is another major report linking deficiency of testosterone in relatively healthy men with increased death from all causes, over time . “We have followed these men for an average of 18 years and our study strongly suggests that the association between testosterone levels and death is not simply due to some acute illness, " said Gail Laughlin, Ph.D., assistant professor and study author. In the study, Laughlin and co-workers looked at death, no matter the cause, in nearly 800 men, ages 50 to 91 years, who were living in California since 1970. At the beginning of the 1980s, almost one-third of these men had suboptimal blood testosterone levels for men their age.

The group with low testosterone levels had a 33 percent greater risk of death during the next 18 years than the men with higher testosterone. This difference was not explained by smoking, drinking, physical activity level or pre-existing diseases (such as diabetes or heart disease). Men with low testosterone were more likely to have elevated markers of inflammation, called inflammatory cytokines, which contribute to many diseases. Men with low testosterone were also shown to be three times more likely to have a waist measurement more than 40 inches, low HDL (good) cholesterol, high triglycerides (levels of fat in the blood), high blood pressure, or high blood glucose (blood sugar).

I am always happy to answer questions you have about issues related to age management and hormonal optimization and welcome the opportunity to consult with any friends or family members you know who have similar goals and/or concerns.

Be Well,
Dr. Mike

  1. I’m 35 years old and have been fighting fatigue, depression, motivation, and focus issues for the last five years. Tried an antidepressant or two from each class to no avail. In all but one case, I got no results. In the one, the results were paradoxical. Provigil and Nuvigil have been good friends but they’ve only helped me approach normal in relation to wakefulness and focus. I still feel like am 90 years old… just 90 and awake. I very recently found out that my total testosterone was at 270 and I got my first shot today. I’ll be following-up with a 1cc shot of 200mg strength testosterone every other week and re-checking my blood levels in 90 days. I can not begin to tell you what a difference it has made already! 3. For me, testosterone replacement therapy has lead to leaner body mass, greater strength, a vast improvement in cardiovascular fitness, and best of all the complete absence of any exercise induced angina. For someone with 25 stents, this is saying something.

  4. This sounds fantastic. Is it expensive? I do not have prescription drug coverage. I'm guessing my testosterone may be low because my sex drive sucks. I'm 39. Jake in Los Feliz, LA.

Great question. Testosterone is a key hormone for women as well and replacement can be life-changing! However, it's just one of the key hormones that we address, I offer complete hormonal solutions to address all deficiencies.

What you heard is correct. Testosterone CAN cause both of those, but almost always in men who are either overdosed, on the wrong form or replacement, or poorly monitored. It's the reason it's so important to see a specialist who does comprehensive hormone testing and follow-up. My Age Management & Hormone Optimization clinic, The Body Well, is in West Hollywood, CA. My Age Management & Hormone Optimization clinic, The Body Well, in West Hollywood, is not a spa but it certainly has a look and feel more like a spa than the doctor offices you're used to. Unfortunately, Age Management & Hormone Optimization is not covered by insurance, but pricing is reasonable and one of the best investments you can make in yourself.
