If you read my column you know that I am not a big fan of wars, but I am also a strong supporter of the men and women who serve our country. That is why the story about Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is so troubling to me.
As you may have heard, Blumenthal told audiences he had served in Vietnam when he actually stayed out of combat zones through five deferments and then getting a stateside spot in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. There is nothing wrong with his having been a Marine or served State-side. Just don't lie/stretch the truth and say you served in combat.
The revelation has had an immediate impact on his standing in the polls, cutting his advantage over one of his strongest potential challengers from 13 points to 3 points.
But following the story about his misstatements concerning his military record that broke in the New York Times late Monday, he found his lead over Republican Linda McMahon, the former chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment, down to 48 percent to 45 percent with 4 percent preferring another candidate and 3 percent undecided, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted May 18. The survey was taken Tuesday evening.
